P News!: Style Icon, Nicki Minaj

To many, fashion and trends are defined by what celebrities wear and what’s hot. Fashion is actually what you wear. As Nicki combines her fashion with her brand, she puts on something new and funky almost every time she is seen on camera. Every one might think she looks “crazy,” but that’s okay, because now everyone is talking about her style.

NYmag.com says, Niki’s style is genius. “it’s no coincidence she’s also the first woman to make a legitimate case for herself as hip-hop’s top dog. Or that doing it, as a woman, has meant turning herself into a doll-eyed candy-colored chameleon, converting talk shows and red carpets into manga strips with impossibly dyed, sometimes dichromatic wigs and a mind-bending array of improbably flattering gear—asymmetric sculptural gowns, patchwork-quilt skirts, and patterned one-piece jumpsuits.”

Nicki Minaj wasn’t always like this; she came from a very interesting background. She went to college for theater and then worked as a waitress at Red Lobster, while relentlessly going after her dream to be a rapper. After Nicki’s mentorship with Lil Wayne, her career took off.  She began to develop her sense of style and created a brand that is noticeable to all. Nicki’s career as a rapper, is more than a career; it’s also a great excuse for Nicki to show her creative style to the world. She is now known for her ability to color block, and add style and character to garments most celebs would not give a second look. Her sense of style, along with her musical talent makes her a trendsetter.

I strongly believe that fashion is what we wear. What we wear is what we advertise for others to see. Fashion has no real definition, it’s what you make it. Everyone has their own imagination and we, as people make up fashion. It’s okay to be a non-conformist and create your own style. For example: It’s easy to see during New York Fashion Week that there are so many ways to create a “look” with prints, styles and colors.  In my eyes, it is important to know that fashion is not only about what’s “hot” and what celebrities wear. It’s about creating our own style.

  1. This is great Pooja! “Fashion has no real definition, it’s what you make it.” Amazing quote, with so much truth. Fashion is ever blossoming and it’s up to everyone to define it for themselves.
